The Visigoths were one of the main Goth tribes during the 4th century. Although they were seen as barbarians, they established a position for themselves when they engaged in several wars with the great Roman Empire. Their army, under King Alaric I moved into Italy and sacked Rome in 410. Around the year 500, they had reached their greatest extent and had conquered many nations.
